Bernard Bégaud (Bordeaux, France)
Bernard Bégaud, is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Health of the University of Bordeaux. Full Professor of Pharmacology from 1987 to 2017 (Dean of the School of Medicine in 1997-2002 and Chancellor in 2002-2008 of the University of Bordeaux), his first researches concerned drug safety and pharmacovigilance. In 1985, he joined the group who were setting up the International Society of Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE) in Minneapolis (USA) and was member or chair of various boards of this Society, including its Board of Directors. From 1993 to 2000, Dr Bégaud joined the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of the McGill University (Montreal, Canada) as an Adjunct Professor. During more than thirty years, Bernard Bégaud was frequently solicited as an expert (pharmacovigilance and pharmacoepidemiology) both by the French Ministry of Health and the French and European medicines agencies. In 1995, he founded the INSERM U657, first French research unit devoted to pharmacoepidemiology. He conducted or was involved in more than 50 large pharmacoepi studies (France, Canada, Spain, UK, etc.). Besides various books (including a Dictionary of Pharmacoepidemiology) and book chapters, he authored about 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals, most related to pharmacoepidemiology. Since January 2019, he chairs the EPIPHARE Scientific Advisory Board launched both by the French Health Insurance System (CNAM) and the French Medicines Agency (ANSM).
